352nd Infantry Division German WWII Soldiers – 24 Figure Set
Defenders of Omaha Beach — the division that made D-Day the bloodiest day in U.S. military history.
The 352nd Infantry Division holds a unique and terrible place in D-Day history: it was the German formation defending Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, and its presence — unknown to Allied planners — transformed what was supposed to be the easiest landing sector into a killing ground. The division's experienced soldiers, many of them veterans of the Eastern Front, had recently reinforced the beach defenses and were on a training exercise when the Allied fleet appeared on the horizon.
Positioned in fortified strongpoints overlooking the beach, the 352nd's machine gunners and riflemen inflicted catastrophic casualties on the American landing craft and the soldiers struggling ashore. By the end of June 6, over 2,000 Americans had become casualties at Omaha alone — the heaviest toll of any D-Day beach. The 352nd's determined defense highlighted the deadly effectiveness of prepared coastal defenses against even a massive amphibious assault.
