Italian WWII Soldiers – 24 Figure Set
Regio Esercito — Italy's soldiers fought across three continents in the most desperate conditions.
The Italian Royal Army (Regio Esercito) fought across an astonishing range of theaters in World War II — the deserts of North and East Africa, the mountains of Greece and the Balkans, and the frozen steppes of the Eastern Front alongside German forces. Often portrayed as unwilling fighters, Italian soldiers in fact showed considerable courage in numerous engagements, hampered more by poor equipment, inadequate logistics, and uninspired higher leadership than by lack of personal bravery.
The Folgore Parachute Division's defense at El Alamein in 1942 — holding its positions until nearly completely annihilated — stands as one of the most remarkable defensive stands of the entire North African campaign. Following Italy's armistice in September 1943, many Italian soldiers continued fighting as co-belligerents alongside the Allies, while others joined the German-backed Italian Social Republic, splitting the nation and adding a civil war dimension to the Italian campaign.
